Redbox with care
Do you Redbox? These nifty little boxes are scattered through out the county; inside your local grocery store, at McDonald's (of all places), at the pharmacy and even at Walmart! They are ingenious! Much like an ATM except they vend movies instead of cash (well, that's apparently open for debate, but I'll get to that!). So, here's how you use it:
You find a box (you can search for one on their website).
You choose a movie you want to rent.
You swipe your credit card.
It dispense your movie(s).
You can choose to enter your e-mail address for electronic receipts and other information, or not.
The cost is $1 per movie per night. You take your movie home and as long as you return it the next day by 9pm you just paid $1 for a movie instead of the $3.99 that the cable company or video store charges. You can rent as many as you want and they have a pretty good selection of current movies.
What's the catch? There is no catch, except that you end up standing in line to use the thing during "rush times." And I can't tell you how stupid I feel standing in line at a machine!
And there is the inconvenience of having to get out of the car to use it (but you can't have everything can you?).
And you're limited by the hours of the location the box is in.
Nevertheless, they are very handy AND you can return your movie at any Redbox, not just the one you got it from.
So, you wanna run out and find one right?
Well, hold your horses... It turns out that as good a venture as these little machines are for the their franchise owners, they also appear to be good ventures for the thieving entrepreneur types. Redbox recently sent out a mass e-mail alerting their customers that one crafty person managed to attach a card skimmer to a Redbox. Card skimmers are used to illegally "steal" or store credit card information. Redbox includes in their e-mail pictures of what a skimmer looks like so customers can be on the lookout for them.
My experience with Redbox has been that they're located right by the entrance which tends to be a busy thoroughfare. So, I'm left wondering how someone managed to attach a device to a machine without going unnoticed. You start to wonder if more people weren't involved.
Well, that is the skinny on the Redbox.
I love Redbox because our grocery store got one just as our video store closed. I say go out and Redbox with care. If you see anything suspicious, you're asked to call 866-REDBOX3, cha cha cha!
