Pet Peeve Tuesday - Over Medication

It's Pet Peeve Tuesday time again.  One of my long time Pet Peeve's is over medication.

I've talked about this before, but it keeps rearing its ugly head.  It seems everywhere I turn, everyone is taking drugs for something/everything.  Can't sleep?  It's okay, take a sleeping pill. Sleep too much, it's okay, there are pills for that too.

It drives me crazy when I see so many drug commercials all the time.  In particular is the Advil commercial of the people who claim they need Advil for various ailments including having started a Yoga class.  In my opinion, if you need Advil after a beginners yoga class that only means you're out of shape and that is more reason for you to continue doing the class.

Are you over medicated?  Do you take drugs at the drop of a hat?  It's never too late to change.  Do your best to get to the root of the problem before taking drugs and you'll feel better for it and your body will thank you.

Lately, I've been having heartburn when I eat tomatoes.  This is new for me, but I've been under some stress lately.  This is a list of foods to avoid in order to decrease heartburn.

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine, carbonated beverages
  • Chocolate
  • Citrus fruits and juices
  • Tomatoes and tomato sauces
  • Spicy or fatty foods, full-fat dairy products
  • Peppermint and spearmint

It also helps to alter your eating habits.  Eat smaller meals.  Don't eat until you're stuffed.  Avoid eating 2-3 hours before bedtime.  This is a surefire way to get heartburn.  Reduce stress.  And, finally, don't exercise right before eating.

These are just a few things you can do.  For more information you can search the internet.  There are many helpful sites with lots of helpful tips.

If you continue to experience heartburn despite concerted efforts to decrease symptoms, you should see your doctor.  Your heartburn may be a symptom of a bigger problem.  For instance, my Hubby suffered through major heartburn for almost nine years before he ended up in the hospital.  It turns out his gall bladder was bad.  It could have ruptured.  Drugs can't always solve everything.

You have a good point with the meds. Unless there is something cronick going on. As we get older however we need meds for High Blood pressure,Cholesterol and a few other things. Now if you watch your diet you can control a lot of things. But some are hereditary.
Once again I agree with you. And as usual you have done an excellent job.

My heartburn was due to pregnancy. I delivered that problem away.

Oh my gosh, AMEN! I am so disgusted when I'm watching television and I see yet another advert for some drug or another. One in particular used to really peeve me... a child coughs or sneezes *one time* and the mother chases him all over the house to force him to take a spoonful of decongestant. THE KID COULD RUN ALL OVER THE HOUSE, and we never heard another cold-like sound of him! He was FINE. But the mother insisted he take the decongestant because of that one little cough/sneeze. *stares* Are we teaching our children that we should never ever feel even slightly bad EVER? Preparing them for future drug-chugging? I'll not raise pharmaceutical fodder, thank you very much.

Beautifully put. I just got back from visiting my parents and in-laws. It's frightening watching them manage these complex boxes of every pill under the sun. They make a joke of it to the kids, but secretly, I wish it didn't have to be this way.

I pray I don't even up on the pill parade. Society always seems to be looking for the easy way out: maybe one day we'll see the error of our collective ways.

This is a good thing to write about, so many just post a picture and words are not needed.
I don't have a pet peeve, I do have two pet dogs.
Now if there was a pill that allowed me to eat peanuts and pecans I might think about taking those!

I must be tired, when I first started reading I thought it was going to be a pet peeves about pets and wondered how many dogs you knew on drugs.

I'm one of those people who will have a headache for three days before I take anything for it. I hate pills and hate taking them and hate it when the doc thinks I need them, like Calcium and such, it makes me gag to think of swallowing pills so I have to not think about it.

Don't even get me started. I just had a pediatrician tell me to keep my kid doped up on Benadryl for a month instead of finding out what's causing her to have non-stop hives. I she COULD have said, "Now get the hell out of here" at the end of her speech about how we'll never find the cause and we should just drug her, she would have.

BTW - I am a HUGE fan of all natural remedies and both me and my husband use two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to stop heartburn. Either by itself if you can handle it or in a cup of cold water with a little honey. Don't ask me how, but it WORKS!!!!! You can't patent it, so don't expect your local pharmacist to recommend it. There's a world of good that can come from vinegar - just google it.

I so agree with you! I feel there are many things that can be treated just by eating right or watching your weight. I don't like taking meds unless I don't have a choice.

Great post. The side effects alone are enough to scare one away from most of the drugs on the market. My husband has severe acid reflux and takes a Prilosec daily along with watching what he eats. I have also heard that drinking 2 glasses of water at bedtime and sleeping on your left side can help reduce the nighttime flare-ups.

I'm so with you on this!

I'm sorry you have been getting heartburn. I hope changing a few lifestyle things helps. I got heartburn a few times while I was pregnant, and I found that as long as I took a walk after I ate (and avoided those "heartburn-ee" foods) I wouldn't get it, or it would be MUCH reduced.
